Wizard on a Skateboard

Down narrow streets and along castle battlements, the wizard skates towards new horizons, indifferent to the fate of the city they once served. It’s the best of skateboarding games applied to the classic 2D platformer formula to offer a coffee-break-length moment of magic.
Build score using a range of tricks and techniques with a responsive and tight control scheme. Play fast-paced, engaging levels whilst recording the time taken. Improve your skills to obtain the best score possible whilst the story evolves through each subsequent level…

Some key aspects of this project are:

  • A suite of the essential QOL features expected from high quality platformers including Coyote Time; static and moving hazards; 2D sprite passthrough with collisions and interactive scenery elements, such as tables and boxes that the wizard can perform tricks on.
  • A dynamic scoring system exists where tricks, and eliminations add to the score. Airtime brings a time dependent value added to the score. Multipliers reward high speed, periods of not crashing, as well as the chaining of tricks. Final score is dependent on time taken to complete the level. Trick fatigue provides diminishing returns to players attempting to rack up score by doing repeated stationary tricks.
  • The game employs a custom movement mechanic where the player character increases their speed quickly over incremental steps. This encourages fast-paced, risk-taking gameplay that rewards player reactivity.
  • The game comes with the essential features such as a menu with settings, in game UI elements and background music.

Backstory

Former employer, the king, decided to cut costs and the first to go was that lazy wizard, who seemingly hadn’t cast an important spell in over 50 years. Unphased, our mage retreives their orb of protection and bids the castle farewell. With surreal and absurd humour, this short experience offers the chance to ditch the broom, abstain from the dimensional door and take up the board to demonstrate your skill.

This game is the first of a collection of short games produced in sprints. Each was made to apply knowledge and improve skills. The concept behind this one came from a deadpan joke about a wizard being under-valued because he does his job well. From here I wanted to make something that blends together the best elements of classic score-based skating games with the clean and simple progression from level-based 2D platformers

Currently the game is technically complete and playable, the next step is to build more levels to implement existing mechanics and assets.
